Zip+4 Attachment/CASS Certification
CASS stands for Coding Accuracy Support System. It was started in the early 80’s to have a mailing standard to speed up the pace of mail and cut down on undeliverable pieces. This system is constantly tweeked and updated to become more specific so the Post Office has fewer and fewer undeliverable pieces of mail.
Ok, we know the Post Office requires it for discounts on bulk mailings but what does it do? CASS certification verifies your addresses have the following:
- A correctly spelled address (no Typos)
- A 9 digit zip code
- A Delivery Point Code (DPC)
Some CASS certification programs can add other things like Lot numbers or format Suites and Apartments but it is not required to. CASS certification only applies to the actual mailing address so things like city district, county, etc. are not updated with a typical CASS certification. Some products may add extra information but remember CASS certification does not automatically encompass anything more than Street Address, City, State, Zip, and DPC.
NCOA
Over 40 million Americans change their address annually, which creates formidable obstacles in maintaining a high-quality mailing list. The USPS makes change-of-address information available to mailers to help reduce undeliverable mailpieces before mail enters the mailstream.
The NCOA process improves mail deliverability by providing mailers with current, standardized, delivery point coded addresses for individual, family, and business moves.
NCOA provides the following benefits to mailers:
- Reduces undeliverable mail by providing the most current address information for matches made to the NCOALink file
- Prevents re-mailings after address corrections are received because the address correction is applied prior to the mailing
- Reduces mailer costs by reducing the number of undeliverable mail pieces by using most current address information
- Output records in a variety of standard formats including fixed-field ASCII (ANSII), DBF, delimited, and many more
- Provides the opportunity for faster product/service marketing through accurate mail delivery
Merge/Purge
Process of combining two or more lists or files, simultaneously identifying and/or combining duplicates and eliminating unwanted records such as deadbeats and nixies. The purpose of the merge/purge is to provide a mailer with the best possible list of names to which to mail a promotion. The input to a merge/purge consists of all of the lists the mailer has rented and several other lists he has created or rented. A common practice is to use one's own customer list (house list) as a purge file, so that promotions intended to generate new customers are not sent to existing customers. Many mailers also maintain their own list of deadbeats and nixies they will purge from the list

Enhanced Carrier Route Standard Mail is a United States Postal Service® mail presortation mailing option. Anchor sorts your mailing list by carrier route so you can qualify for discount postage rates. The mail requires no primary or secondary distribution unless mailed at automation rates, carrier route mail pieces usually do not bear barcodes.
